In conversation with our founder - Part Two:
At Joy Lab Academy, every day is an adventure — because the best learning happens when kids are free to just be kids.
What makes the Joy Lab Academy different from other micro learning environments?
I've done my homework. In the process of researching and developing the Joy Lab Academy, I visited a significant number of schools across the area. While I was genuinely impressed by some of them, none came close to the depth of child-centered, open, and self-directed learning that we're building here. That gap is exactly what drove me to create something different — and I believe what we're offering is truly unlike anything else available to families in this region.
A Philosophy That Puts Kids First
At the heart of Joy Lab Academy is a belief that kids learn best when they're trusted. Our program combines strong core academics within thematic learning alongside significant chunks of the day where students can lead their own education. Kids get to just be kids. That balance — rigorous academics woven together with genuine freedom and self-direction — is rare, and we're committed to making it the foundation of everything we do.
Teachers Who've Been Waiting for a School Like This
The educators I've been interviewing for Joy Lab Academy are some of the most qualified and passionate people I've encountered in my time in education. They're coming with years of experience in both private and public school settings, often holding multiple certifications. But what has moved me most is what so many of them have said during the interview process: this is my dream school — the kind of place they've always wanted to create or be part of. They're not looking to return to traditional school environments. They want the freedom to design curriculum that is genuinely child-centered, that lets students flourish, and that lets kids be kids. The enthusiasm among our teacher candidates has been remarkable, and even educators who aren't in the final pool have reached out to say how glad they are that someone had the courage to do this. That kind of response tells me we're onto something real.
Tuition That's Actually Accessible
One of the things I'm most proud of is our tuition. At $18,500, Joy Lab Academy is significantly more affordable than many local competitors — and a fraction of the cost of traditional private schools in the area, which can run $60,000 to $70,000 a year. We believe that an exceptional, innovative education shouldn't only be available to families at the very top of the income spectrum, and our pricing reflects that commitment.
A Location That Says Everything
I'm beyond thrilled about our home in Central Jamaica Plain, inside the Hope Central Church. As a real estate professional who works across Boston, Cambridge, Somerville, Arlington, and beyond, I've always had a deep personal affection for Jamaica Plain — particularly for its extraordinary amount of green space. Our location is surrounded by it, both on the church property and in the immediate environment, which matters enormously for a school that believes kids need room to breathe, move, and explore.
And practically speaking, we're a two-minute walk from the Green Street T stop. That means students from a wide range of neighborhoods and backgrounds can get here on public transportation. Diversity — in every sense of the word — is a core value of Joy Lab Academy, and this location actively supports that vision. Most micro-learning centers in the greater Boston area are located outside the city. Being rooted inside Boston, in a neighborhood as vibrant and varied as Jamaica Plain, is something we see as a real strength.
We're building something special here. And the response — from families, from teachers, from the community — tells me the timing is exactly right.
