Where Curiosity Leads the Way.

Joy Lab is an independent learning center for children ages 8 to 11. We are located in Jamaica Plain and rooted in the belief that young people learn best when they pursue their interests within a supportive, mixed-age community.

Learners spend their mornings in structured, experiential, academic lessons that are based on themes that students help select. With three teachers and a maximum of 15 students, Joy Lab offers a 1:5 teacher/student ratio.

Afternoons are devoted to open, self-directed education, accompanied by other students with similar interests and caring adults who function as mentors, facilitators, and guides.

Everyday activities include project-based learning; substantial time outdoors to play in nature, pursue sports and physical education; and frequent field trips within and beyond Jamaica Plain.

We believe school learning feel joyful, purposeful, and connected to the real world.

Our Mission

The Joy Lab empowers students to learn with purpose, curiosity, and independence. Through a balanced blend of focused academics, real-world projects, and self-directed exploration, we cultivate capable learners who think critically, collaborate effectively, and engage meaningfully with their community and the natural world.  The type of playful outdoor discovery typically associated with summer camp happens here. Year-round.
